When Emma and Nic first reached out to me, they were planning what they thought would be an engagement session at the beautiful Crooked River Distillery near Memramcook. We had already captured their unforgettable engagement session on the cliffs in Cap Pele — an session filled with dramatic light, real emotion, and a few unexpected moments (including a rescue unfolding just behind us).
So when Emma messaged me a few days before their “engagement party,” I never could have guessed what she was about to say.
They had decided they didn’t want to wait any longer — they were going to get married that night.
The best part? Their guests had no idea.
When I arrived, the air was filled with nervous excitement. Emma and Nic were buzzing with anticipation, trying to contain their laughter and keep the secret from spilling out. We snuck away for a few portraits before guests arrived — right in front of the venue where everyone would soon walk past. They kept a close eye on the driveway, slipping their wedding rings on for photos whenever it was safe to do so. Guests had been told not to be late, so they began arriving early, cutting our portrait time shorter than expected — but we made the most of every moment.
The entire event was set outdoors, overlooking the rolling hills and river. As the sun began to dip, guests mingled, listened to live music by Felix Belliveau, and enjoyed two stunning charcuterie boards provided by the venue, along with a celebratory champagne toast. Laughter and conversation filled the air, with no one suspecting a thing.
Then came the moment.
Emma’s sister took the microphone to “welcome” guests and suddenly announced that there had been a change of plans — Emma and Nic were getting married right now.
While the guests gasped and cheered, Emma and Nic had quietly snuck away to change into their wedding attire. The shock, joy, and pure excitement on everyone’s faces were unforgettable — some teary-eyed, others speechless, but all absolutely overjoyed. The music began, and the processional started. The best man and maid of honour walked down a makeshift aisle created by cleverly placed cocktail tables, designed to keep the surprise under wraps.
Then, Emma appeared, walking hand in hand with her father. She and Nic exchanged emotional vows as the sky faded into twilight, overlooking the soft glow of the river below. Though the sun had already set and I began using flash, the images turned out just as magical — the light reflecting the warmth and emotion of the moment perfectly.
The evening ended in celebration — laughter, hugs, and the buzz of disbelief that they had truly pulled off the surprise of a lifetime. It was one of those weddings that perfectly captures what love is all about: joy, spontaneity, and being surrounded by the people who mean the most to you.
Emma and Nic’s surprise wedding was the perfect reflection of who they are — full of heart, laughter, and a deep love that couldn’t wait another day.
